Agreed, the Shack Nasties are very prevalent this winter

This cold is ridiculous. They’re finding many dead woodcock here in south jersey. It’s such a shame.

Gentlemen,

It's one of the coldest winters we have had in a long time, and also the snowiest to go along with the cold. Very dangerous for the birds and other animals right now. Was -6 last night here with another 1/2" of snow. Its almost like an old time February here in Pa. The axis of the earth has turned to the cold side for sure, get ready for some nasty winters!

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave

We’re shooting a match right now. Challenging to say the least.

I feed the deer corn after the season. Normally only see 5-8. We had 15 does the other day all arguing over the corn. Apparently the other herds have come into the area and they all get territorial.

We have been having to put boots on the dogs when they go out. I have had to hurry them, drag them, pick them up and carry them in when they take too long and give up walking.

I am actively encouraging, and they are cooperating with, no sniffing, hurry up and pee and poop and get back in where it is warm.

I am thinking of snow blowing a path down to the woods and feeding the deer. Problem is that it is almost 800 feet to the back of our yard where the woods start and the deer are the most active.

I'm sorry to hear that folks and wildlife are struggling but... here in Colorado we aren't getting much of a winter at all. It was 65 degrees here yesterday and bright sun. In the mountains the ski resorts are barely open and the snowpack is at record lows. I was out shooting clays in a light shirt and a medium vest here on friday and it was delightful! All sun, no breeze and perfectly comfortable.

Historically, the two coldest weeks here are the last one in January and the first one in February but this year we were in the 60s and sunny. Frankly, I'm enjoying the break from all the shovelling and salting that I would normally be doing. My old 4x4 truck just sits and my utility bills are still negligible. If we don't get some snow here shortly, we'll be listening to the local media howling about drought and fire dangers (it's always something panicked with them) but our heavy snows here are usually in March and April so it's still too soon to worry.

I hate to say it, but...I'm beginning to appreciate this "global warming" stuff.

I feed them normally about 100 yds from the back door. Been thinking of making a second area 30 yds closer to keep them from fighting. And then we could watch them a bit closer. Apparently the bucks dropped their antlers early, so there may be a buck or two chasing does away. I watched one deer chase of about a dozen others, thinking it’s a buck.

We recently had a couple weeks of cold weather here in SE Kansas with the big snowfall lasting much longer than normal for this area. Today I enjoyed shooting at my local gun club in seventy degree sunshine with a couple guns that I inherited from my recently deceased father.
The guns were like what I grew up with, Remington, an 870 with a 26inch IC Barrel and an 1187 field model. Tried trap shooting wiith the 1187 since it had a full choke tube in it but my trap shooting was below par and I can not blame it on the gun, I just don't shoot much trap lately. Then I went to try the five stand with the 870 and shot the best I have ever done. Broke a 23x25, took a break and shot again with a different target sequence and broke another 23.
Now I have to get back out there with a sxs to feel normal again.

It is finally going to warm up a bit here in NE Ohio.

On Tuesday the 10th, we will see 46 degrees. What a great birthday present after so many single digit days. Tuesday will be the anniversary of my 69th trip around the sun.

We have had lots of single digits on both sides of the 0 mark lately. It has been like this in Ohio for decades. Sure we have had cold snaps, some below zero, but not for this duration.

In Jan 1970 I was in Minnesota for a few weeks. The temps were in the -30s and cloudy for several days- Then one day I was seated at the counter in a cafe, looking across the street to a gas station. The sun had come out, it was bright sunny and the temp went up to almost 0. To my surprise across the street the attendant was pumping gas in a short-sleeve shirt. A picture of him with the clock/thermometer on the bank in the background would have been cool.

My great-grandparents farm was west of St. Paul out on the flatlands. At different times in my dad's childhood, they went back to live on the farm. He said he remembers below 0 days for weeks on end, with lots and lots of snow.

The coldest temp I have actually been out in the woods in was an honest -25 or so with a -50 wind chill. I had dressed warm, but the boy was still cold. I swore from that day forward that I would have warm clothes.

I will admit though to wearing shorts outside when I walk the dogs when it is close to 0. I do have a coat on though and wouldn't do it if the wind was blowing. It is easier to stay warm when you keep your core warm. But blowing wind will give you wind burn when it is that chilly.

The only time I remember Lake Ontario freezing over , we went ice fishing on Oneida lk . We had built extensions for our spuds - the ice was probably 40'' thick (most I ever remember ). However , just a little snow on the ice , brilliant sunshine , and a couple of the guys were down to tee shirts , was supposed to be 10' ! Coldest winter yet back then , but ideal conditions once you got a hole cut ! (Kodak shops was the only place you could get a spud extension built at a totally reasonable price !)
