After reading PineCreek’s story about rio grande turkeys, I recalled a true story I read when on a hunting trip in Terrell County, Tx about a local horse named “whiteman” and his cowboy around the year 1900. Apparently the cowboy was searching for some missing livestock and found bear sign which he followed. He rode up into a small canyon following the sign until it was too tight for the horse, so he hobbled the horse in place and continued on foot. Soon upon going around a boulder, he came face to face with the bear. After short fight, the cowboy got knocked out. He was later awoken to the nuzzling of white man. The horse’s head was bloodied and one ear was tourn off but hanging by a strip. A young mexican girl who had been up on the rim of the canyon tending goats, witnessed the action. Apparently when the cowboy went down, the horse got to him and went onto the bear to protect the cowboy, running off the bear. (Continues) |

So everyone made it back to the ranch, but the cowboy’s injuries required convalescence, which he took in Oklahoma, a train ride away. During his absence, he left whiteman in the care of the same mexican girl. Well word spread quickly about the fantastic horse that fought a bear to protect his cowboy. The girl secretly released whiteman with a certain herd of wild horses for safeguarding him. In a short time, some bandits came up looking for the horse. Finding out she had the horse, they demanded she turn over whiteman to them which she refused to do. The bandits then kidnapped someone close to her to use for ransoming the horse. (Continues) |

While that was developing, the cowboy recovered and returned to south tx about three months later. First order of business was to find the girl and retrieve whiteman. That’s when he learned of the kidnapping incident, still ongoing. He contacted the Rangers and his cousin the local sheriff, and the bunch of them went down and retrieved the girls love one. Whiteman had remained safe and sound the entire time with those wild horses. The cowboy and whiteman rejoined, and the horse remained in good health living with his cowboy for many more years. Sometime in the twenties though, the cowboy was killed by a thief in a drug store robbery. |

wahoo,
The Legend of Terrell County Texas is well known, it was in fact told to me by Don Moody many years ago, the people in Texas swear that it is absolutely true.
I would not doubt it at all.
