The other day I noticed I had one cylinder bore for my Browning 16 gauge. I don't remember ever using it before and thought about getting a second one to shoot skeet with. Of course I also have two skeet tubes. Has anyone ever used the Browning cylinder bore for skeet and what do you think about it. I thought an ounce of #9 out of a cylinder bore might be good. What are you thoughts and experiences? I know I use my Benelli with cylinder bore on skeet and seem to do just fine with it.

I think you answered your own question after all cylinder is cylinder.

For 7/8 ounce of #9 shot, cylinder will do fine. Its a bit thin for 3/4 ounce or less out at the longer crossing shots. I use IC for all my skeet and 3/4 ounce of shot. Breaks them if they are in the pattern every time for any station.

Before the advent of the one-piece plastic wad/shotcup, it was felt that cylinder bores would cause a 'dough-nut' pattern as the fiber wad ran into the shot after exiting the bore. Probably never really happened and modern shells give patterns with excellent distribution of shot without choke out to 25 yds or so:

Choke Pattern Diameter
Approximate Pattern Diameter (Inches)
Choke 10 Yards 20 Yards 25 Yards 30 Yards 40 Yards
Spreader 23 37 44 51 66
Cylinder 20 32 38 44 57
Improved
Cylinder 15 26 32 38 51
Modified 12 20 26 32 46
Full 9 16 21 26 40

This was compressed moving over from Word, but cylinder choke fills out a 38" circle quite nicely using 8 or 9 shot.

I used to have a Citori 16ga OU with several chokes, including both cyl and skeet. I can't swear to it because I no longer have the gun, but I seem to recall that skeet was tighter than the IC chokes I had. (Just miked one of those today, and it was about 006). Seems like cylinder had some constriction too, which it shouldn't have, but I'm not sure. Best thing to do is get someone with a bore and choke gauge to measure your tubes for you.

For standard skeet in a 16, you shouldn't need anything tighter than the 006 I measured on that IC tube. Less should work OK at skeet ranges too, as long as you're not shooting anything larger than 8's.

If I want donuts, I just follow my local trooper. He knows the best spots.

My high end Spartan came with one choke of each constriction. For skeet I use I/C on the first bbl and Cyl for the second shot.Using 3/4 oz of home shot I have run some good scores with the only misses being the pullers fault and not because of a bad pattern.

Someone cut my Stevens 5100 before I owned it.
I managed a 24/25 once in skeet with it. Missed Low 8 on the second shot.

Point of information:

Can a miss really ever be the pullers fault?

Call me needy but part of me wants to believe I shot the bird, not that the puller did his part to put the bird in my pattern.

As they say, "never bring a knife to a gunfight and never quote scripture to the good reverend"! I for one would have walked into that one blind because I didn't even remember that Jehoshaphat was a biblical name! If 16GaugeGuy is a heathen then I must be a Pagan! Very Happy
