Can somebody tell me if Remington used to make an 870 Wingmaster on a true 16g frame at one time? If I read it correctly, Remington’s site doesn’t show a 16g Wingmaster until 2002. I saw an older, used, plain barrel 16g Wingmaster that couldn’t have weighed more than 6.5 lbs. It sure looked older than 5 years. Wood is a bit beat up, but the price was right! Thanks

Quite sure all the 870 16s are on a 12ga frame - aka "standard" frame. The 20ga were on a 12ga frame for quite some time until they became known as LT-20.
And you can bet they weren't making plain barrel guns in the 21st century!

I bought a new 16g 870 in 2004, 28", rem chokes. Gun was an absolute PIG. Over 7 pounds, very muzzle heavy. Bought an older 28" plain mod. barrel on Ebay, sent it to Mike Orlen, and had it opened up to .008, and use it for everything. Gun now weighs 6#11 ounces, feels much better. For reference sake, my 28" 16g model 12, which is on a smaller frame, weighs 6#10oz. Heck, the recoil pad on the 870 ought to add a coupla oz. complared to the plate on the M12.
Sold the Rem choke barrel, and haven't looked back. |
