Took posssesion of a nice 16 bore bird gun this past weekend. H. Clarke & Sons, Leicester, England. Established 1833 and ceased production in 1963. 2-1/2", 28" choked .005/.011. Double trigeers, extractors. 6lbs. It is a nice handling, nicely finished mid-range English boxlock. Should prove to be an ideal ruffed grouse gun.

A real beauty! Nice fotos, too, as well as subject.

You might want to join the 16ga low pressure reloader group (whether you reload of not) for good advice & counsel on the stuff to feed this old diva, &c&c.

Welcome & enjoy!

jaybird.
welcome to the 16 ga society and congratulations on your new purchase.
Apart from Boothroyd and Nigel Brown ,the only other reference to Clarke of Leicester is from Ian Crudgington and D. Bakers book The British Shotgun.Volume 1 page 215. Which features the first Daw hammerless shot gun with a replacement set of barrels by H Clarke.Which seems to indicate that they had manufacturing capabilities.Where a lot of provincal gun suppliers were just that.
Could you please supply a photo of the froof marks.

good shooting

That's a real beauty! I'm extremely envious. Smile

What's the length of pull?

If you don't mind, what did you pay?

Nice gun. The forearm is somewhat reminiscent of a Remington 1900.

Hey folks:

Thanks for the interest and information about my Clarke.

To answer some of your questions:

1) I received the gun as a gift from a dear friend that visits to hunt ruffed grouse with me so I don't really know what it's monetary value is.

2) Stock dimensions 1-3/8" x 2" x 14-5/8" to a horn buttplate.

3) Here is a photo of the barrel flats with proof marks.

Hey Jaybird,

You wouldn't happen to the same Jaybird who frequents the Classic Bamboo Fly Rod forum, would you?

My username there is Caneseeker. Couldn't help but notice. Welcome to the Forum. Oh, and nice double.

Very nice little 16 bore, and excellent photos as already stated. Congrats of a fine gift which should provide many hours of happiness in the coverts or just in the hands while admiring!

Hi jaybird

Thanks for the proof marks.

the gun has Birmingham proof marks and the fact that the chamber length is stamped on the flats 2 1/2", means it was proofed between 1925 and 1954

good shooting
