I have been visiting this board for some time, but to date I have not made a post. The protocol seems to be an introductory post on who "Chicago" is. I am a longtime upland game hunting enthusiast who ownly recently acquired a 16 ga SxS. In my own defense I grew up shooting my grandfathers 16 that was unfortunately lost at his death.

For reasons I simply can not defend I hunted on the dark side with a 20 ga and 12 ga until this Spring, when shopping for another 20 ga, a wise gunmaker suggested a 16. Well the move has been made and I leave Wednesday the 26th in pursuit of the elusive gray ghost and his minature friend the Woodcock. I will be gone until the end of October, when I return for the Illinois/Wisconsin pheasant season. May the 16 indeed "carry like a 20 and hit like a 12." All assistance is welcome with my gray feathered friend.

I grew up in SW Michigan, left for military duty, and did not return until the 80's. I lived in northern Michigan again until 1992 when work brought me back to the Chicago area. With a grandchild now here in the Chicago area I am having a difficult time convincing my better half that life in better in "da U.P." So I will live with life on the road with my dogs, hunting partner and me. Not a bad existence.

Chicago Mike Very Happy

I didn't know people actually lived in Chicago. However, welcome to the board, and good luck with the birds..MDC

Welcome to the world of the enlightened. Grandchildren do lock the spousal unit within driving distance of the kid's home. Thank God when I retired from the USMC and moved to Idaho that I was able to convince the daughter to move up by us with her husband. Now that we have a grandson, the wife has no time for anything else!

16's make a SxS a joy to carry and shoot. You will enjoy it.

Good luck on the hunt

Thanks for the welcome and I look forward to reaping the knowledge. My assistance will be more on hunting and dogs than the technical aspects of shotguns.

hoashooter and MDC - Chicago is part of Illinois with a population in excess of 50 folks, but your'e right I don't realy live in Chicago but about 60 miles north of the Loop on the Wisconsin border.

Revdocdrew - One in the same from doublegunshop. I noticed you were here with some frequency.

Chorizo: I too was in the USMC from 1967 to 1971. Might we have crossed paths?

You two are "old Corps". I bet shields were issued as duece gear when you were in Laughing Laughing I retired in 2001 after 21 years. I spent 1/2 my career as a Huey pilot and the other half working intel/attache jobs throughout Europe. Loved my time in and really love my retirement. Miss the Marines and sailors; don't miss the Corps. It is a young man's game.

Just got back from a late morning windy & wet bird hunt. It was spitting rain so I carried my Huglu 16ga 201(ringneck). Could have shot some pheasants (not open yet) but no quail. I did get one hun but the others landed in Western Montana (I live around Boise) so I wasn't going to chase them.

Clean-up of that black chrome gun is a snap. I was done before I finished my glass of whiskey. One more quick snort and it is nap time!

Semper Fi.

525field:
The world is indeed a small place. Yes, I was in the Air Wing and I believe they called me a parachute rigger, even though I was always in Choppers and mainly worked on pilots gear and life rafts. Was over the pond for all of '69 and stationed at Marble Mountain where I spent a fair amount of time behind a 50 cal. Duty stations were '68 at Santa Ana Airbase, '69 Marble Mountain and 45 days in Iwakuni Japan, 70-71 at Glenview Naval Air Station.

A pheasant hunt in exchange for a grouse hunt? I know a fellow jarhead is not going to shoot me by mistake.

"Old Corps" - You bet, just Clint and me. One thing I know though, unless things changed alot since I left, you were probably using the same liferafts, helmets , microphones and survival kits I packed or worked on in those finer times. Smile

Sorry to hear your hunting was not a little more productive, but the worst day of hunting has to beat your best day in the Corps.

Indeed - Semper Fi

Chorizo and Chicago,

Man, I spent a lot of time around jarheads while in the Army and I can say is I always felt sorry for you guys. Seems like Air Force guys had it good, Navy guys had it by themselves, Army guys had it bad, and Marines had it REALLY bad. I spent a year in the 82nd Airbone and thought that was bad until I compared notes with a guy in the Marines. Wink

That is one of the reasons we have a Marine Corps mafia. We know the &%(* that we've been through. With that said, I am glad to be around anyone that served, you all make me proud just to say I was one of you.

Semper Fi to all of you.
