Gentlemen,

Check out my article in the Spring 2007 issue of the Upland Almanac or the chapter on gauges in my book 'Shotguns for Upland Game' or the article in the November 2006 Shotgun Sports, 'A 16 Gauge Season'.

Not all of us current writers believe the 16 to be dead or dying.

BTW - Information from several gun makers/importers who make 16's is that they can't make them fast enough. THey have 12's and 20's on the shelf in the warehouse but are backordered on 16's and are making them as fast as they can.

One ammo maker told me that they are selling so much 16 ammo (all they can make and it still gets backordered) that they are building a new assembly line JUST for 16 gauge stuff (and yes, we will probably get a 7/8 ounce 1150-1165 FPS load from them when the new line is up and running).

Of course these aren't the huge conglomerate companies. They are just smaller companies that listen to the consumers, find a niche in the market and fill it!

I was in Scheels Fine Gun Room this summer looking at a Grulla 216RL and asked the sales person how they expected to sell the gun when they had exactly two boxes of 16 ga. ammo on their shelves. As I have 4 16 ga sxs that I hunt with I order by the flat from RST and Able Ammo. I have hunted with and own doubles in 10,12,20,28 and 410 but like the 16's the best. My first 16 was purchased factory direct while. aboard the USS Long Beach in Naples, Italy. It was a Beretta Mod 410E splinter , straight gripe, 32 in. F&F at a cost of $124. Oh how I would like to get that one back. That was about what I was being paid as a MT 3 per month, probably would have to pay one months retirement to get it back now 40+ years later.

I've got the last 5 flats of my Fed game load from Sportmans Guide. Their prices aren't as bad as Cabela's and after you buy from them they give you a cert for $10 of a $99 purchase. That makes 2 flats of Fed ammo, after you join the club, $45 a flat. Not too bad by today's standards.

I'm about to lay in another 4-5 flats of #8s for Sporting Clays. Wink

Those are secret societies. I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.
