This is the Posting about the Pheasant loads , thought you folks might like to see this .

Hello Jig :

I see you visit this post as well as the 16ga.com web forum.

Do you have the chrome polished up on your bikes ???

It was mentioned that Bob Brister published the book that you obtained all the data from .

About the time I was have Cervical problems from all the shooting I was doing , I seem to recall that Bob was having a problem with a Detached Retina , each was attributed to EXCESSIVE RECOIL .

I also seem to recall that Bob solicited Ballistic Products up in MN. to produce a load called the KILLER BEE'S this was a load of 3/4 OZ of small shot at High Velocities 1400-1550 FPS.

I also seem to recall that a phrase went like this " The 16 ga typically used as an upland game gun , with shot sizes ranging from # 4's down to 7 1/2's Interestingly smaller shot seems to provide superior performance , even at longer ranges in the 16ga.

I understand that Bob used the KILLER BEE'S load with great sucess at the time with clays and game , Hmmmm seems that someone else was using High Velocity and small payloads of small shot and it just wasnt being publicised as much as we might think.

I am going back to the Standing Rock Indian Reservation , leaving the night of Nov. 2 arriving the 3rd and hunting Sat.- Monday that is the 3rd thru the 5th , The limit is 5 birds daily and 15 possesion limit same as the state the only difference is the daily limit .

I will extend the same offer I did on the 16ga Society web site , come meet me up at Mobridge Sd , we will be staying at the Grand River Casino on the Reservation. My cell Phone # is 573-280-8548 contact me and I will make Reservations for you and link up for the Hunt.

We will hunt side by side you take notes on how many shots I take and the distance, confirm a dead bird or a cripple , and total # of birds I come away with in the game bag at the end of each day , take pictures and write up the tally of what you have taken notes of for everone to read on the postings .

I will be shooting the 2.5" 3/4OZ 7 1/2 shot at 1410 fps this load was checked by Tom Armbrust for pressure and velocity,

I visited with Tom Armbrust about the load that I am shooting , His comments were " I can see where you can take large gamebirds at the extended ranges. For you are shooting a CORE WITH DENSE CONCENTRATION OF PELLETS , but most people cannot make use of the core and need the FRINGE to take game "

This is Tom's take on the 3/4 OZ load " It's not for the average shooter, but for the folks that can take advantage of it's properities of holding a small but dense pattern at long range"

the reciepe is as follows

Primed Chedditt hull
18gr Rex-1
Gualandi wad 1618 or 1621
Velocity 1410 fps
pressure 9200 psi
Temp checked at 75 degrees

I think you will find if you do the Math that This is the True Square load for the 16 bore , we need to forget about gauge and think in bore dimensions.

The accepted bore diminsion for the 16ga is .662 , we take a gualandi wad with a shot cup depth of .650 then subtract the thickness of the pedals of the shot cup .020 two times " you have two sides of the shotcup " equals .040 this is fourty thousands for those asking what is going on .

You will do the math inside the bore for this is where the shot does its thing not in the case .

.662 -.040 = .622 this is the dia. of the shot charge inside the bore , now you have a load that produces a slight snowcone in the case when loaded but will set back into the shotcup when entering the bore slightly , the height of the shotcup is .650 the dia. of the shotcharge is .622

This is about as square a load as you could hope for with a plastic shotcup in the 16ga bore dia.

I think in the old days and in Europe that they figgured it out as a 15/16 OZ load with the old fiber wad. as the square load not the 1 OZ as everone thinks .

This is why I have designed the wad that I am currently making the Mold for in 16ga to hold the 3/4 OZ payload with the added feature of compression and loading the 7/8 OZ as well with the same wad .

If you folks would like more information on what I am doing feel free to visit the 16ga.com website this is the home of the 16ga Society , this is the site I do my posting to .

I will go back to the 16ga.com website and continue my work .

Regards Charles

He chuck,

can I call BS on one of your other loads and get invited to hunt with you too? Very Happy

Seriously I have loaded many 3/4 ounce 12 and 16 gauge loads. They work great. "Squareness" aside with the price of lead these types of loads may be the future of the Walmart promo load.

Charles,

My main two guns are a Sweet 16 and a Model 21. The pheasant never hold it against me however. Wink

I will look forward to stomping weeds with you. Be prepared for a lot of questions on 16 gauges

Hey Brian :

That is great we will have a good time , I will put you onto so many birds.

Lets see how high your legs can go for the weeds are pretty high in some of these places and when your worn out its hard to hit birds .

Ah I used to shoot a Humpback too , never shot a 21 too poor to own that type of shotgun ( Smiling)

Looking forwards to it .
