So far I have been able to bag 50 birds (and counting) this season using Golden Pheasant #5 with cylinder in bottom and imporved cylinder in the top of my FAIR with no issues or desire to go with a tighter pattern, ofcourse I owe the ability to have such close shots to my pointer Lou.

Over a pointer I perfer open chokes. I use Skeet / IC invecters in my Citori.
When I do dog training next summer I plan to use Skeets in both barrels.

My thinking is a little different & I hunt over pointing dogs. If you are shooting an older SxS as I do with 2 1/2" shells, a one oz. payload is is the norm. So, I use copper 6s out of .018 & .028 chokes & pick my shots from 20-35 yds. Easier for me to wait a bit than to hurry a shot. With this setup a hit will slam em & a miss will be just that. If I wish to use #5 shot for prarie birds I will still have the pattern density to drop a larger bird at 40 yds. I may, after this season, open the rt barrel a bit but not much but the .028 will stay the same.
My 20 ga Quail gun is a different story .003 w/ #8s & .028 w/ #71/2s. Still like that tight second barrel here

Larger bird- larger shot- tighter choke
