I have heard that it isnt good to shoot steel shot through older barrels. I have my dads old sweet 16 that I wouldnt dream of taking into the timber to duck hunt with but am wanting to find a good "shooter" to turn into a timber gun. Would steel shot hurt the barrel? |

DO NOT put steel in that Browning!
No-tox options are very limited - do a search here and you'll find a bevy of threads covering it.
options are:
find a modern gun and use steel,
load your own bismuth/tungsten matrix
use Kent Tungsten Matrix loads |

What will steel shot do? I have another older magnum 12 that had some pits it the barrel so we had the barrel cut and threaded for chokes and have shot steel out of it for a while. |

usually bad things - especially on a collector level - head over to shotgunworld.com and sniff around the Browning forum.
No sweat on the cut up barrel on the "larger than 16 bore" gun - its already lost collector value and the open chokes should make it a fine shooter |

The Belgian and pre invector Japanese barrels will not handle steel shot due to softer steels and thinner barrel walls. It will eventually bulge the barrel, usually behind the choke.
The larger shot shot size and the tighter the choke the faster the bulging occurs. Some shooters report getting away with it for a long time with guns with Imp Cyl chokes and shot smaller than BB.
I wont put steel through any of my A5's unless they have a true cylinder bore.
