I've been lurking around here for about 6 months while looking for a 16 bore to keep my 12's, 20's and 28 company. After looking all over the internet and at the Southern SxS show and the Vintager's World SxS show it showed up in a local auction less than 2 miles from my house. I wasn't able to be in town for the auction so I put in an absentee bid lower than I really thought it would go for and, to my surprise, I ended up high bidder.
It's essentially all I was looking for right at a price I was willing to pay so if the auction description isn't dead nuts on I'm still happy. According to the auction description it was made by Joseph Lang in 1864 as a 20 bore and rebarreled in the late 1870's or early 1880's by James Woodward as a 16 bore. I'll probably pay Atkins, Grant & Lang their fee to see if the original info is correct and Purdey now owns Woodward so I'll see if they have any records on rebarreling it.
It's a non-rebounding hammer back action with a Jones underlever. The Woodward damascus barrels were nitro proofed for 2 5/8' shells in Birmingham sometime in the 1990's.
I'll continue to hang around here and will probably post on occasion. Since this is my first 16 bore I don't have much to offer so I'll continue to listen to those who know. |

It's a danger to shoot wiht those barrels. Send it to me in Ma for proper disposal
nice gun, I assume you know all about RST for LP 2 1/2" shells. You should show it off over on UJ. |

Welcome aboard. you will enjoy yourself here. It"s good to see another English gun on the forum and one with a bit of history and a great pedigree
Pay the fee and get the history They will make a great conversation piece look great in the gun case.
I was looking on the UK ebay the other day and managed to pick up a cartridge resizer and a cartridge extractor to put in my gun case.
If you look on the UK ebay type 16 bore you may find something
good shooting
