Thought I would share a photo of some Pheasants we shot at Castle Valley, Utah last weekend. 3 16 gauges, Sterlingworth, Lefever DS and a LC Smith Field, ejector. The other misguided sole is shooting a 28 ga Citori.
Thanks,
Gordon

Great pic and looks like a lot of fun. Our season is coming to an end in the next couple of weeks.

Don't worry about the guy with the 28ga, he'll see the light sooner or later. Very Happy

Nice time Gordon!

Jon. My son is only 7, my daughter 9. But both of them are champing at the bit to go hunting.

Bought my son his first gun- the venerable daisy red rider, cut it down so he can shoulder it. He only shoots with supervision, and his gun goes in the safe like all the others. He is VERY proud to own his own gun. I'm sure he has informed all that will listen. BTW he won 3rd at the Pinewood Derby. I have to throw that in for all that will listen.

Ash, two thumbs up on the derby.

Gordon, That's a great pic, the kind that you can stop & look at for a spell. It's not your run of the mill pile of dead birds on the tail gate.
Thanks for sharing

Wasn't Castle Valley featured in Shooting Sportsman or Upland Almanac a couple of years ago? Can we get a description of the area, the hunt, etc.?

Jon, you are right. The guy second from the left is my son who has been hunting with me since he was 10. His wife is expecting their second in June and rumor has it that it is a boy. I guarantee you that he will join us on hunts and hopefully love it as much as we do. Not to be discriminatory, I am looking for a Pink 16 ga. SxS for his 1 1/2 year old daughtor. Any suggestions??
Castle Valley was featured in an article some years ago in Gun Dog Magazine. There is a link to it on their website. I discovered CV from a topic on the Parker Gun site after Rich Flanders and Trigg went to Castle Valley and wrote about it. I talked to them and decided to book a trip. Could not have turned out better. It is a first class operation in every respect. They are the only Orvis Endorsed Wing Shooting lodge in Utah.

We liked it so much that we have reserved another hunt in November. Their web site is below.

They have recently had unseasonable snows (no doubt as a result of Global Warming) and so most of their 4000 acres was un available to us. However we had a wonderful hunt on the remaining property that we could get to. The guides knew their stuff and their dogs were great. They didn't mind that we brought our own dogs and while ours didn't do near as well as theirs, it was great seing our couch hunters having such a great time, eventhough they are not used to hunting at an elevation of over 6000'.

Castle Valley was featured in Gun Dog magazine in probably 05 or 06. I have been their twice. I enjoyed it each time. The first time I went with a friend and we walked a lot and shot a lot and brought home someting like 120 bird in three days. We had a few quail and some chukar and a lot of roosters and no hens. It was late season so even though it is a preserve they were letting all the hens have a pass so they could nest.

As far as a desciption they have a lot of fairly flat ground so the walking can be pretty easy. There are also more difficult areas in creek beds and draws if one want togo there; I did but most pople don't.

They have a lot of released birds that have been out there awhile, but they also plant birds. It depends a lot on what you want.

The second time I went I put on a 90th birthday party for my Dad and we had the whole Lodge to ourselves and had a great time. I did ore with planted bird and easier terrain on that trip.

You can look at their web page to learn more. It is Castle Valley Outdoors and Google will find it easily. If you want to go I would call for Jim Fauver the manager. He is eay to fellow with which to deal. If anyone gives him a call you might let him know I recommended them; it might help a little.

We shot about 75 birds in 2 days, all Pheasants with about 6 Chuckers thrown in. We saw a few quail, but they had a bad year and weren't many around.
We mostly hunted the previously released birds in the creek beds and draws and it was a lot of challenging shooting in all the snow. We were going to hunt Roosters only, but Jeremy took a count and decided to include Hens.
All in all, I would highly recommend it.

Gordon,

I have to tell you that I brought my shorthair down to Castle Valley for that birthday party and really had a great time. He can be quite a dog, and he found the great majority of our birds. The guides paid the dog a lot of compliments including asking if they could arrange to breed to him. One of the guides told my brother that "with that dog on the ground you don't need another one". As you may know he is my first bird dog and I apparently really got lucky to get the one I have. Richard Flanders told me long ago that the problem with a dog like Dodger is I am spoiled and won't ever be able to find one like him again. I will enjoy him while I have him, and if the truth be known I like all kinds of dogs so I think I will be ok with the next one as well. All and all it was a great trip; it was good for the dog and good for my family.

With regard to the quail I spoke with Jim the other day and he was pretty confident that they would have them back next year. In fact he seemed to expect to have a lot of them,,I hope he is correct they add a nice dimension to the experience.
