A couple months ago I asked the users of this forum for their advice on
which 28ga. SxS I should get for Bunny hunting. ( to save the 28ga. Citori
from the wrath of the briar patch ) I followed the suggestion of several very
knowledgable responders and bought a CZ (huglu) SxS. I was asked to provide a field report.
I have now fired two rounds of trap with it. Functioned perfectly and did well
with 3/4 oz loads of # 8 shot.
Last Saturday I participated in the annual O'Mally Clan, St. Patricks Day
pheasant "SHOOT". I say SHOOT because in the morning we ( 19 of us )
shot at 190 birds in a "European" style hunt where they throw the birds at you from atop a 75 foot tower. We were placed behind large round hay bales set in a circle about 75 yards from the tower. In the afternoon we set out in small groups with dogs to try to recover the 110 of the 190 birds that we missed in the morning's fiasco !
I had intended to start out with the 28ga. just to see how it did and then
switch to the 16ga. Citori. I know that what I did will be considered a SIN
to the faithful believers of 16ga. theology BUT... I was having so much
fun that I used the SxS-28 all day.
I had the CZ choked for IM on the left and IC on the right. That seemed to be a slight handycap for the overhead shots at the really high fliers .
It worked great for the pointed / flushed birds in the afternoon. I was using store bought Winchesters with 1 oz. of #6's.
The CZ functioned perfectly and was a joy to carry. I would recommend a CZ of any gauge for it's workmenship and reliablity.
The 28ga. will never replace my 16ga. guns for general field work but
the CZ, SxS 28ga. combined with good Beagles will be tough to beat
in the Bunny patch.
Please forgive me for leaving the 16ga Citori languishing in the Jeep when there were so many pheasants about. Iam sure that more than a few of my 16ga. Brothers will have me doing penance for such a sin !
Who knows, maybe CZ will come out with a 16ga. SxS.
Thanks for your time....Dale Wolcott |

Rabbitdog,
CZ already makes a 16ga SxS.
Which CZ 28ga do you have? The 2 trigger 26" Bobwhite or the single trigger 28" Ringneck?
I wish CZ would make the 28ga Bobwhite in 28". If they did I would already own one.

The Bobwhite has a straight stock, with two triggers. |

Square Load, I have the "Ringneck" model. "26" inch barrels. POW round knob stock. Single selective trigger. Weight is 5.5 lbs.
I'll have to check on the 16ga SxS now !

Bobwhites are also case colored if I'm not mistaken. I was just trying to point you at a two trigger, 28 ga., 28 inch sxs.
Like I said, the configurations may vary. I bought a 16 ga. straight stock, single trigger sxs with 26 inch barrels from him. Basically a Ringneck, but with a straight stock. I would compare the quality with the CZ guns I have seen and held.
If you call him, I'm sure he will check to see what he has coming in or on order.

mdm1,
Thanks for the tip, you sure had me excited for a few minutes. I looked them over, he has almost every configuration except what I am looking for. Straight stock, 2 triggers, case hardened with 28" barrels. I think CZ is missing a lot of sales by not offering the 16ga and 28ga in this configuration. They sell the 12 and 20 like this with 26" and 28" tubes.
May have to buy an Uggie.

According to Huglu they manufacture 5 different gauges with frames to scale. However, the 16g (while on a 16 gauge frame) usually weighs more and/or close to the same weight as the 12 guage because the 16g uses 12g barrels just with a smaller diameter hole bored threw it (leaving more metal in the barrel and therefore heavier).
It is the only barrel they do not make proportional to the gauge because "there is not enough demand" according to the Huglu factory.
I like all the other gauges of Huglu Guns - I own 3 Dehaans in 28g, 20g, and 12g but I can see no reason to own a 16g that weighs as muchs or more than my 12g.
