Cormac McCarthy's book (and movie) No Country for Old Men takes place in desolate Terrell County, Texas. Terrell County, one of the largest Texas counties, is over 2400 square miles with 1081 souls according to the 2000 US census. More turkeys than people. This past April an old friend invited me to hunt with 8 others on a private ranch in Terrell County which is only hunted 3 days in the Spring. 9 of us bagged 13 birds in 3 days. I was lucky enough to bag a 19.5 lb. bird and called two more for two friends. Lots of turkeys were harmed in the production of this photo--blame it on Rio.

OWCH - I'm still hoping to fill my first tag in any state.
Oh - If I may suggest blurring out your license tag - some bad folks apparently can do things with it...I'm not sure what exactly but that's advice I'm given. |

I assume this picture was taken on day 3?

It's a rental truck. The birds were field dressed within an hour or two after shooting and were kept in a walk-in cooler until the last day when the breasts were fileted, frozen and brought home in a cooler. One was sent off for a mount. Only 12 are in the photo; another was killed in the afternoon after the photo.

Why do you think Terrell county is desolate? All it needs is some rain every now and then.

Rainfall? What's that? Sanderson, the county seat of Terrell County, averages a whopping 6.9" of rain annually. There is practically no surface water. Why so much game? What soil nutrients exist are not flushed deep into loam away from plant roots like in the Southeast by heavy rainfall. Green vegetation is high in mineral and protein content. This particular ranch has an extensive water system of water troughs which are gravity fed from storage tanks which benefits all wildlife. It's a working cattle ranch. This area, West of the Pecos, gives meaning to the word "parched". What it lacks in water, it makes up for in oil and natural gas. It's also loaded with dove.
