I wanted to start this thread so as not to hijcack the other one.

Sam you mentioned washing my vest several time, and yes that would work, but what I'd really like to see is a shorter, button front, vest. Ideally it would have front entry to the game pocket, maybe a quilted shoulder. But buttons not a zipper (I hate the damn things).

At 5'8" the filson Vest is really just a bit long on my frame. Every step I take, I raise the shell pockets with my legs. Walking all day gets old if I have to lift box of shells with every foot lift. That is why the strap vest works better for me. I know someone has to make what I would call and old fashioned vest that is of quality materials.

Thanks

ash

Ash,

From time to time Filson discontinues then reintroduces the original vest:

I have one, and it's shorter than other non-strap vests they make. Buttons, front or rear loading. In terms of fit it's kinda bell-shaped, broad at the waist. My other vests tend to hug the waist more. But this one is much more comfortable when carrying lots of phez.

Sam

Ash:
Filson used to customize the length if you called in the Spring when they were making the vests. I got my Filson original vest about 25 - 30 years ago and had it made about 2" longer than the standard vest.

Not sure they still do this, but worth a call.

I guess I should have said I hate Blaze too. I've got a blaze hat, shirt, half vest, but I really want this thing to be khaki or neutral. I like the basic cut of the bean vest but no cigar.

Filson made on at one time, I know they will remake (or would) old styles for an up charge. That may be the way to go.

thanks for the responses.

Actually an OK Tuxedo is a Pair of Levi's, Boots, Jean Jacket, White shirt and bolo tie.

I use one of Bucks Bags, great vest. adjustable to fit any length, inside belt to put the weight on your hips not on the shoulders.

Ash: LL.BEAN makes a very nice button vest. I bought one for my brother, who like you hates them damn zippers. Loads front, side & rear several pockets & shell holders both sides. It has padded shoulders both sides.

Call Filson, within reason they will try to accomodate you. I have used this service before a few times to obtain exactly what i wanted. Filson even changed thier 'Waterfowl' coat for me from zippers and snaps to all buttons when I discovered that the zipper was scratching my gun when I shot with the coat unzipped. No charge also.
Order the 'Original' hunting vest how you want it but have it made out of unoiled double tin cloth. The unoiled is much more supple right out of the box and unless you will be in continuous rain and cold wind, is really a better alternative to regular oiled tin cloth. I have changed all my Filson over to unoiled tin cloth.-Dick
