Arms Manufacturer Remington Closing Gardner Plant
GARDNER (AP) ― Remington Arms Company says it will close its Gardner plant by the end of this year.

The firearms manufacturer said Monday about 200 workers will be affected. Remington said some will move to other positions. Those who lose their jobs will be offered severance and outplacement and referral services.

Company CEO Tommy Millner said in a statement that it was "a difficult decision" but the company believes the consolidation will allow it to be more competitive "in an increasingly demanding global marketplace."

North Carolina-based Remington sells sports weapons as well products for the military, government and law enforcement.

It's a damn shame if you ask me. I'm sure glad I bought five 20ga's for all of my grandsons over the last few years.

I really hate to say it after being a Remington fan for the first half or my life, but (IMO) Remington is an embarassment as an American firearms mfg these days. Their QC fell off in the 90's, and they've never given a hoot to get it back where it once was. Now, they've gone and bought some other decent American firearms companies and seem intent on running them into the ground or selling them off to keep their own, mis-guided myopathy going. You can damn sure bet the CEO will not be affected in in way finacially Evil or Very Mad

My loyalty towards Big Green has waned in recent years due to stunts like this not to mention quality of their product has fell off considerably.Case in point--My Special Field 16 made THREE trips to the factory before they ended up shipping it back with a new receiver Shocked

They won't have to worry about spending my so called stimulus check with them Wink

Marlin has been owned H&R for several years, and they've been producing good inexpensive firearms. You knew what was going to happen when the Remington gang bought out Marlin.

Marlin will be next to go away under this "global economy" policy of Remington. How about a Marlin 336 made in Russia? Several recent Remington shotgun offerings were made there. Winchester is also offering a .22 from the Russians.

Too bad. And yes, the CEO won't be bothered a bit $$ wise.

Remington received some stimulus money from New York and is moving H&R/NEF production to Ilion.

Remington press release on its website says its moving to Kentucky

As a Mass resident I'm sorry to see the H&R factory go. As a fan of the 16 I'm sorry to see Rem get rid of all things 16.

I am happy to see the H&R factory stay in the U.S. if in fact it is moving to KY.

I'm recently seeing my own brand loyalty rapidly fade away from Remington overall - between their loss in manufacturing standards and the reduction in 16ga products specifically I'm moving towards other options, albeit slowly...

Is Remington's 700 line still good? I've been thinking about a bolt-action varmint rifle for a while, and the 700 has a classic reputation. What I'm reading here is a bit unsettling and makes me think I should look elsewhere for a solid bolt-action rifle.

You're better off buying an older model 700 than a brand new one.
