Gordons for me. With the exception of last year my hunting has been grouse and woodcock in Wisconsin.

Was too busy building a garage and taking care of ailing parents last fall, so I didn't get to make a trip anywhere.

OHHHHHHHH !!!!!!! Nutcase are you talking about an Irish Setter ???????

Charles, yes he is technically an Irish Setter registered with both AKC and FDSB.

Is he a good dog? Depends if you ask him or me, and when you ask me. Wink Only lacking in training, not ability.

Regarding the red setters, we had a breeder here in Alabama that I looked at some time back. The reds were Irish setters with english crossed back into them to get back some of the 'birdy' bred out over the years....or at least that was the line I was fed.

Yes, ALMODUX that is basically what happened, though it was 45 - 50 years ago.

Here are some pics:

Well, considering that the Labrador has been #1 in AKC registrations for eternity, I'm surprised you lumped them in with "other".

And don't kid yourselves, there's a reason they are #1 !!

My lab and I hunt everything you can find in MI, MN, SD, SK

Waterfowl of all kinds, huns, pheas, sharpies, rufus, doodle, etc.

Quail and Pheasant- like many folks the quail has been spotty the last coulple.

I hunt over my Perdigueiro Portugues (Portuguese Pointer) Used to use my Lab, and ShortHair. And my cousin's English Pointers and a few setter crosses.

But I'm willing to shoot other game and hunt over other dogs...Just invite me over Very Happy I'll bring coffee, and if I have the time sausage and cheese biscuits. I'll say please and thank you.

Good thread Charles I hunt with a Pudelpointer he is one of the North American Versitile Hunting dogs. I hunt Grouse,Woodcock,Waterfowl with him but you can train them to do alot more. They are the perfect dogs for my hunting style. They hunt and point upland game with the best of them and retreive Waterfowl with a fire I have not seen with alot of retreivers. Fantastic companions and house dogs on top of it all. There should have been a vote choice for Versitile breeds. I'd post you some awsome photo's but don't know how.

Basset Hounds!

I've never seen a dog that could out-flush "Ol' Rummy" on quail and pheasants in heavy cover. Ask any serious French hunter from the lowland thickets of Normandy or Brittany, and they'll tell you all about bassets.

Now in open ground, Voss' pup might just outrun Ol' Rummy since he is getting old and ready for retirement, but in the heavy cover where I normally find birds these days, the basset is the dog! Very Happy

Shouldn't be too hard for Rummy to keep up with that cord on Scapa.

Check the date on the pic. He was 6 months old and only ran to about 400 yards at the time.

You can always tell a lawyer by his grip.......the "lawyer grip." Here's OSL's grip on his first Chicken.
