Stories.
Stories of hunts or stories of dogs? I have enough in my 69 years to fill a book. I think the best stories are about dogs. I started out raising and traing Irish Setters and then switched to labs for duck hunting. 30 years of labs and I now have a GSP/lab cross. Is he the best I've ever had? I don't know. He's been hunting since he was 4 1/2 months old.
Here's a story from one of his first hunts.
I was up at the local preserve and had some birds put out. The number I don't remember. Anyway the dogs got a bird up and I shot, the bird flew way across the field then dropped like a stone. Walked over there and the old dog, going on 14 was a t the bottom of a big pile of downed trees that had been pushed in a pile. The young dog was on top of the pile, so I crawled up there and the pup went into the pile and reached up with the pheasant and handed it to me. I then had to reach down and haul the pup out as he was stuck in the brush. You had to be there to enjoy the situation. I bet they are simialar stiries out there. I have many more from my years of hunting, Are they interesting to others I don't know. i just enjoy watching the dogs. That's why I hunt. If anybody is interested I have more. |

Spr310, The best hunting dog I've ever had is the one I have now; a 13 year old gsp/blk. lab.
When she was about 2 years old one day, two phez got up. I barely dusted the first and he kept motoring full speed. I thought forget him and shot the second bird.
But my dog didn't forget the first and when I was picking up the second bird, she came back out a woods with the first one. Saved my double.
She's great at finging downed birds. If the bird holds, she points, otherwise she works it like a lab.
Don't know how she will be this year but last year she could still hunt 3-4 hrs. before tiring. But I'm 69 now and we tucker out about the same time. |
