I'm rebuilding a Stevens 335 that has some family connections. Unfortunately, it's a 12 guage but I know that there seems to be a good double gun base out here that might be able to answer this. I ordered new firing pins and they are a bit shorter than the originals. Is .038 protrusion from face adequate for igntion? My surviving unbroken but battered old pin has a protrusion from the face of .055. Thanks in advance for your replies. RD |

Some of the stevens/savage guns have "extra long" pins in them, which leads to the pin getting stuck in the primer, and making it hard to open the gun. I guess a decision was made to insure reliable ignition, while reducing the amount of fitting required during manufacture.
Perhaps your replacements are designed to prevent over strike and lock up? |

If you have a spent shell from that gun, look and see how deep the pocket is in the primer. It should give an idea how much protrusion you need. |
