Since today is opening of grouse season I decided to take my Ithaca NID (of course it's a 16!) and my old GWP for a walk. After a few miles of exercise I hear three shots about 100 yards ahead of me. When I get there I find a young (early twenties) woman and her mother standing looking up into a tree. I walk up and they point up and ask me: "Is that a grouse?" I look up and see a ruff doing the usual tree-sittin. I said "yup". She said, "He won't fall! You shoot him" I said no, it was her bird and she was gonna have to do the job. Then I told her to try again. She puts the gun up and yanks on the trigger with the safety on. The muzzle must have moved a foot! What a flinch! I calmly told her to take the safety off and coached her through the shot. This time the grouse fell. The girl let out a squeal and hugged her mother. They are jumping up and down while my GWP retrieves the bird. She said this was her first grouse and that she is gonna be happy to show it to her husband when he gets back from bowhunting tonight.
I left the woods with no grouse in my vest, but with a memory more precious. |
