Understanding the rules of no politics in postings, I do want to throw this out there.

I think it's fantastic that an outdoors friendly candidate (and female) is in the spotlight. Out of the blue last night, my 10 year old daughter asked to go goose hunting with me this weekend.

So, with my 16g 870, we'll be in the blind at sunrise. It's gonna be a great day...

hb, that sounds like it will be a great day indeed. Just curious, what load do you use for goose? If you also use the 870 for duck I would be curious about the load you prefer there as well.

I have been hesitant to use my 16 gauge for waterfowl.... I was/am concerned about the effectiveness of steel. Your experiences and opinion would be welcome.

Ajax.

i'm shooting federal 2 3/4 #2 shot steel. not so much because I prefer em, just because I have several boxes that have been collecting dust.

they seem to pack plenty of punch and will drop a goose with no problem.

my 870 is an early gun will a 28in barrel and full choke. it throws a pretty mean slug at deer too.

Good News all the way around Mr. Belton!

Not to hijack the thread, but in regard to Ajax' question, I've not been real impressed w/ 16ga steel, but if the creature is close enough, it'll work. Impact by Kent and handloaded bismuth have produced some phenomenal results on waterfowl for me.

I'm pretty stoked about the GOP VP candidate. Never heard of her before, but she seems like a winner - hunter, pork barrel buster, reformer, AMEN!!!

The 16ga can handle waterfowl just fine. It would not be my first choice for geese, but works great for ducks over decoys. (especially teal which opens Saturday!) I do not like the commercial steel loads, there are some decent loads from BPI for steel, but better loads using hevi shot.

Tungsten Matrix is great on ducks (and anything else) I have used both #5 and #6.

Would be trying Nice shot reloads for first time, but having re-loading issues and won't get any loaded in time for this weekend.

Trust me, with the right size and load of Heavi Shot, the 16 will hammer goose as well within reasonable ranges. It's just not the gun of choice for sky busting. You'd need a good Hieni 88 for some of the shots I've seen these guys try for. Laughing
