Not much interest in this one--maybe the tenite scares 'em away??? |

The gun has three turn-offs. The Tenite, the sloppy solder on the rib and the starting price.. MDC |

I agree that the Stevens 311 (5100) is not an expensive shotgun. It never was designed to be much more than a reliable field gun. How many have you seen fall apart? How many were returned to the factory for repair (like so many of the modern guns)? To that extent the 311 has been successful.
I continue to be amazed about the comments on the tenite stock. This was an early attempt at a stock material other than wood. It was not well received by the general shooting public. Today, on the other hand, most manufacturers use "plastic" stock materials on even their best grade guns. Now the public has embraced the new material, but we continue to hear how bad tenite stocks are. Interesting how old perceptions do not change.
I would sooner take a reliable $300 shotgun into the field that I could shoot well, rather than a beautiful $3000 shotgun that I can't hit anything with. |

From a functionality standpoint, tenite makes sense. Strong, very light, and very durable. Great for a grouse gun, right? Except that it makes you feel like you're shooting a bigger version of the plastic bb guns you shot when you were a kid. |

I have a 5000/16 30" MF with ivory beads , made in the 1930's that puts that piece to shame. |

I have a Stevens 124 side bolt 12 guage originally stocked only in tenite. Unfortunately as these get older the tenite is becoming brittle and starting to crumble. I've looked all over for a replacement stock for this gun. Once in a great while one shows up on E-bay but the price is always ridiculously high (You could buy an entire gun almost as cheap) or the stock for sale has cracks also. In fact Gun Parts is now making wood replacements. Of course 311 wood is a little more common. RD |
