The fact is that there is no objective need to ban lead shot or bullets because hunters don't deposit lead in concentrations high enough to contaminate the environment or threaten populations of flora or fauna. There is however, an active political constituency that wants to eliminate hunting and firearms because they perceive firearms and hunters as evil.

I have encountered many people in this constituency in the deer and turkey woods, town meetings, waterfowl blinds and wildlife refuge hearings of New England and the common denominator is always their ignorance of firearms, hunting and hunting regulations. It sounds like an NRA cliche but the fact is that we have to always be vigilant and stand up for our hunting privileges and firearm rights.

I had an economics professor in college that gave a surprisingly simple example of "supply and demand" at our first class of the semester in the form of a question. "What is the best way to guarantee a healthy population of any aniimal?" After many incorrect answers by students, the professor gave a similarly simple answer "Make it a game animal, because hunters will then pay to ensure that animal population will thrive." The fact is that hunters and shooters always have- and will- contribute more money, time and effort to wildlife and habitat conservation than any other single political constituency, we just have to vote and insist on the respect we deserve.
