It would seem that Longshot powder might be a good replacement for the old 540 or 571 in Win CF hulls. It is a "magnum" ball powder that is very dense and thus should work well in the older Win CF cases for heavy loads. I went to the 16ga Reloaders site & noted that there is no data for 1 1/8 oz of shot even though a filler is reqired for the 1 oz load listed. This prompted me to review my personal reloading notes to confirm my recollection that my old favored live bird load in Win CF cases using 571 powder actually only holds 1 1/16 oz of #7 shot when using the standard 1 1/8 oz MEC bar. I am thus tempted to drop down a grain or two as a starting point. Has anyone here tried Longshot in Win CF cases yet?

540 was always one of my favorite field load powders. I still have several pounds of it. HS-6 substituted for 540 and HS-7 substituted for 571. I use Longshot in my 20ga reloads. I'm going to try it in my 7/8 and 1oz 16ga with paper hulls but don't have them yet.

From one old hunter to another ... Thank you. I have enjoyed using 540 & 571 for a number applications including 28ga. 540 was one of my standards for live bird 20 & 16ga loads. A friend gave me about 1# of Longshot to try with the jab that it would bring me into the 21st century. He also gave me a handful of Federal case reloads that are very stout to say the least.
