I've gotta ask an ignorant question. Actually 2 questions that are related.

I've a Rem. 1100 with chokes of Imp, Mod, and Full. Can I safely put in the chokes from different manufactures?

If that is safe, what kind of stresses might I be placing on the barrel if I insert and extra full choke?

Briley has a chart that will shows what chokes are compatible with Remingtom type (http://www.briley.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=131). I wouldn't use anything but compatible chokes and follwo the manufacturer's directiosn for those chokes (e.g. no steel, tungsten, etc. through tighter than modifed unless instructed otherwise).

I'm not sure what kind of pattern percentages you would get with an extra full choke, but I have obtained 97% patterns at 40 yards with a full choke using buffered reloads. I did this a long time ago when I pass shot at geese.

Ditto what jschultz says about super tight duck and geese patterns with lead shot! Those were the days!!!!

A little secret for you though..... The actually choke constriction can only do so much.... Too much can be as bad as too little at times. Buffer is a real help for super tight patterns but there are many things to test to find the best!

Not just as simple as screwing in a tight choke and think you are automatically there....

1.In my experience Remmy chokes are USUALLY a degree tighter than marked.
2.If possible mike the chokes to determine true constriction.
3. Chokes have nothing to do with pressure or stress on the barrel--it's what's on the other end---powder charge, primer, bufer, etc that could give you problems.

I bought a pair of X-full tubes for my 16 Citori but I havnt tried them yet. So I dont know what the pattern would be. I wanted them for turkey but I just cant put my Ulti Mag down.

I'll need to do that. I'm wondering if there is additional benefit to create a good pattern at a longer distance.

Whatever the distance a good pattern will ensure a clean kill whether the target is round or feathered--Keep in mind different loads thru the same choke will produce different results

There lies the challenge.

I was thinking about the SXS with full and extra full choke that I let get way, and wondering if I'll really miss it? Conversely, I saw pictures of the same load shot at about 35 yards, with IMP, MOD, and FULL. As the choke increased, the number of wild shot increased and pattern worsened.

It got me wondering about goose hunting, and can I reliably harvest geese with a 16 gauge?
