.
Have various pump action, semiauto, side-by-side, and over/under 16 gauge guns.
But don't have a single shot.
What would be a good typical hunting 16 gauge single shot ?
Was there a Winchester 16 gauge that would have been common at one time ?

I think Beretta made one. I have a hammerless .410version my dad bought for me back in the 70s . |

Winchester made the Model 37, undoubtably the most popular American single shot ever.
My hunting buddy hunted for upland his whole life with a Mossberg 16 gauge single shot and never seemed handicapped by only one shot.
Beretta and various Italian makers produced a number of single shot hammerless shotguns. I had one for my wife and it was extremely light.-Dick |

H&R or NEF
Still made in America. Been around since 1871. "Everybody's" owned one in one guage or another. |

If I wanted a single barrel to actually hunt with, my choice would be --

I'd look for a Win. 37. Of course I'm kind of partial since a 37, 16 gauge was my second gun. It's the one on the bottom. When I went from my .410 to it is when it started taking more than one hand to haul my ducks back to camp.

My brother received an Iver Johnson Champion 16 ga for Christmas when he was 13..... many many years ago. He still has it but has not shot it for years. My brother-in-law had a 12 ga Win 37. Both were quality guns. |

Picked up one in 20 ga recently in about 75-80%, 6 lb 6 oz for $150 out the door.
About a year ago picked up a made in 1950 Beretta 16 ga folder; 4 1/2 lbs. Went hunting the other day with it in one hand and a sandwich in the other. Kinda' like one of them long barreled Wyatt Earps.
Researcher, I really like those informative pics you come up with. |

The attached photo is of an EXCEL, I believe a copy of the Iver Johnson Champion, sold through Montgomery Wards. I got this on off GB for about $75 several years ago. A good solid gun with 2 3/4" chamber.

winchesters model 37 red letter is probably the best known series of utility grade singles,
but there were several other manufacturers such as those made by crestant arms a prolific hardware gun builder, which was latter to be bought by j stevens/Savage , they sold thousands of servicable single shot guns in all guages including 16s,
i have a old iver johnson 28' (mod) matte rib in the safe that has decent checkering and a scrabnel forearm and it a wonderfull gun, i would not feel underguned with that old shotgun in competition with any of the pricer trap grade singles, it might not be as pretty but it shoots where i look everytime i shoot
remington is or was importing some east european/ tuurkish made single shots recently, that i have never looked at |

Another vote for the Lefever single in 16ga. Occasionally available on the Net, With advancing age I am now doing most of my bird hunting with my first gun. Also of interest that Savage also made a hammerless single shot that was available in various gauges though I have not seen or handled one. |

The hammerless Savage was a Model 220, the 219 was a rifle of which I have 2. I'd like to find a 220 in 16 or one of the IJs, HRs with a solid rib also. Have to prowl some of the gunshows. |

An old single is somthing that is mighty nice when you have to walk a long way and shoot little , I have a Beretta folder coming my way in 16 I hope I can hit with it for I would think I will do quite a lot of hunting with it .

Charles, my 1950 Beretta folder is choked full; 16" pattern at 20 yds. Regulation was spot on. Think I would like to open it up to .011.
To remove the forestock; unscrew the sling swivel. |
