Thre are lots to choose from

I currently take a Winchester 37 with me when I go for a walk.

The Stevens 94 are good strong utility guns, and I shoot them occasionally.

The beauty is you can try one without spending half your annual income on it, and trade it off for another one easily if it doesn't suit you.

The only 16 gauge single I own is J. Blanch & Sons London hammergun on a Jones Underlever action. It has 28" barrels & weighs 4.75lbs.

one of the great perks of bellonging to this group is seeing some of the really COOL stuff out there - nothin like that in gun stores !

I have a 1947 H&R Topper in 16ga. It was my first shotgun and I take it on a hunt every year. I took a turkey with it last spring with #4 shot at 20 yards.

Grouse hunting I do carry a Winchester Model 37 in 16 ga. This is a hammer gun.
I don't find it to be much of a handicap for grouse hunting. Many times all you get is time for a single snapshot at Ole Ruff anyway. It is not my everyday go to gun but I took several grouse with it this season. I think I posted a photo on here earlier this year of it & a bird.

This sixteen has 30" barrels and weighs 4lbs 9oz.

I shoot black powder 1oz loads in it, 7-1/2s for BobWhite

English, they are Birmingham proofed. Mine is an Ebrall Brothers out of Shrewsbury. Can't remember the name on my friend's.

I have my Dad's Win. Mod. 37 16 ga. Red Letter. Haven't shot it in 30+ years (maybe 40!) He liked it even more than the new fangled 16 ga. Model 11 Sportsman he upgraded to once he got a decent job after always scrimping to put us kids first and himself and his hunting tools last. I wouldn't trade the world for it. He used to always comment that he'd be the first one in the group "on the rabbits on the jump" with the single shot before the other guys could get their pumps and autos in action. God, I miss him. I'm pretty certain that those pumps and autos were mostly model 12's and Rem. 11's.

When I was too little to go with him I'd practice shouldering that 37 for hours practicing for the day I would finally be "big enough" to go with him and his buddies. It was going to be the first gun I used while he carried the 11. Unfortunately, he stopped hunting as I was getting started and we never actually hunted together. I walked with him with no gun as a kid and he walked with me (with no gun) and my Britt only once when we hunted a small easy cover after he was pretty old and not moving too well. At least I have those few memories. I never did hunt with the 37 as I had started with the 11 before growing out on my own.

Reading this thread has motivated me to take the single to the skeet and trap range the very next time I go and after the shootings done, I'm going to have a premium beer and thank God again for what a wonderful Dad He provided me.

Funny, I'd been fondling the 37 lately and just yesterday was thinking about shooting it just for nostalgia sake and then I saw this thread today! It will be my first round of trap in 25 years (I'm strictly a skeet guy) but it's full choke of course so I'll shot some trap along with the skeet. I have some spreaders too.

Hey A5Mag12, rayb and Fourtrax, ...what's the length of pull on your specimens if they are factory original? Mine was used as a loaner for my buddies in high school as I carried the 11 and one of them dropped it on the ice and broke the stock so he replaced it for me and returned it. I came home from Parris Island after Dad had written telling me "the single shot is back and looks like new...you can try it when you get home". It turned out that it was likely a "youth" stock as it is very short and I see the entire top of the gun when I mount it. I'd like to get it to original length or whatever fits better. I may even have it opened up or use spreaders and start hunting with it.

Sorry about the length of this essay...but the emotions got to me. Hope you all understand.

Those English side-hammer singles are way, way cool. Forehand and Wadsworth made a somewhat similar gun, but only in 12 gauge.

My taste in single shots runs to Savage 220's, Iver Johnson Champions, old H&Rs, and old, (pre model 94) Stevenses. I'd love a 16 gauge Lefever Long Range if I could find one.

I've never cared much for Winchester 37's. My experience, at least with .410 37's, is that it's too easy to get a shell in behind that narrow ejector, which prevents closing the gun. That's a problem I've never had with singles having wider ejector/extractors.
