Seems about once a year I start looking over the load data for the cheddite wads and wonder if I am on an island without reloading partners using this wad.
I am using bowbuilders loads (using my 1628 version) for turkey hunting in April for the 2nd year in a row, but I might be obtaining a bag of 1632 wads. Anyone have additional load data. Here is what I have for the 1632:
1 oz in Federal hulls using Unique or Universal powders.
1-1/8 oz in Fiocchi hulls using Herco or Universal powders.
Never know when you might catch someone trolling that might have more experience. |

Charlie the only load that I use with the 1628 wad is a 1 1/4 load that Bowbuilder developed . I load it using #6 NPL from Precision Reloading . Only use a couple a year for Turkeys , its a great load .
I have both the 1628 and the 1632 wads and the only difference in the 2 , is the 1628 wad has the little pins in the over powder cup and the 1632 wad doesn't |

fn16ga,
Funny I think we usually end up talking about this between us.
I agree Bowbuilder's 1-1/4 oz #6 pushing at 1,125 FPS is perfect from a Turlock turkey choke on a BPS. Took my 2 turkey Iowa limit using that load last year. 1 at 25 yards from a blind and another from 25 yards while stalking him (great adventure).
I had a chance to get some 1632 kind of cheap so I was thinking of grabbing them up and using for some 1-1/8 oz loads when pheasant hunting (or at least testing the patterns against the Z16 and SP16 wads). I suspect they will be very competitive.
I want to keep my 1628 for the turkey loads, so this was more of an experiment. There is a load using the 1628 in a Cheddite hull and Longshot at around 1,300 FPS that would work, but I would rather get my FPS down to around 1,250ish and use a powder better at performing on a regular basis in 10 degree weather (something you Florida boys don't have to deal with )! As you might be inferring I think the 1628 and 1632 load data can be safely used by both assuming you are not pushing the pressure limits.
Was in hope there might have been someone that tested using 800X, Blue Dot, or Herco. |

This is the load that I am using
Load #2: (This is a great load IMO and patterns very, very well for me.)
· 1 ¼ oz #6 lead shot (Remington)
· Cheddite Green Hull (8 mm brass) 2 ¾” 16 ga
· Win209 Primer
· 22.5 grains Longshot powder
· Cheddite 1628 wad
FPS (1209, 1211, 1217, AVG 1212 ES 8 )
PSI (11000, 10600, 11200, AVG 10933 ES 600) |

Have either of you tried the cheddite hull and primer 26 grains Longshot with z wad 1 1/4 Oz load listed in the spreadsheet. |

bs77,
I only use the 1-1/4 oz #6 for turkey loads which I try to keep the FPS down around 1200 or less. Otherwise the pattern seems to blow.
For pheasants I have loaded up 1-1/8 oz with 22.5 grains. It is a great patterning load, however, I tend to do my pheasant hunting in very cold conditions and have been hesitant to use longshot under those conditions based on other complaints I have heard about its cold weather performance. In my M12, the patterning board difference between my 800X load I use and this 22.5 grain longshot load were nearly the same. |

I have read about the bad cold weather performance of longshot. But I seen that load I mentioned listed and thought it sounded really stiff. I kinda thought about loading a few to try at the 27 yard line for shoot offs in trap. But I don't want to shoot a load that knocks my fillings loose in my teeth either. |

bs77,
To your point, I don't even look at a field load of lead over 1,300 FPS. In most cases I tend to stay under 1,250 FPS. A 1,375 FPS load of 1-1/4 oz shot just sounds like a rough day at the range. Good time for a 9 pound gun! |

Trulock Precision Hunter Turkey Choke (the more open non ported version) using a BPS with 24" barrel. I get strong patterns out to around 35-40 yards which is all I ever need.
But I suspect your more interested in the pheasant choke. At 1,240 ish fps I get my best pattern with a M12 with the poly choke set around modified. |

Thank you very much for your input I will load a few to pattern with my citori I have trulock extended chokes full thru skeet so I will start with modified and work from there. I was thinking this may be a good load for hi flying crows as well |

Just tried some of the Cheddite 1632 wads in a straight substitute for Z16s. I haven't had them tested but leaning towards sending some in.
Cheddite green 8mm head new case
Ched primer
22.2 800X. What my #31 bushing throws in my Sizemaster. Fairly uniform drops though I was expecting big swings
1632 wad with a brandx cherrio under the shot
1 1/8oz nickle plated #5 shot from Precision
6 pt crimp
3 loads over a Pro-Chrono gave 1225, 1253, and 1270fps. Bright sun and I didn't use the sun shades.
Patterns were visually tighter than the Z16, especially in the center, with fewer flyers around the edges of the pattern paper. I haven't drawn any circles or sectioning to count holes yet but it's fairly obvious that the center of the pattern is tighter. This held with the IC choke as well as the Modified through my Dickinson Estate 16ga SxS.
I haven't had this load tested so obviously I'm not advocating it's use, just giving out information as I find it. |

Not to nitpick here, but unless I'm mistaken, Cheddite wads come only in 12 gauge. A quick check of their website shows this.
I believe you might be referring to Gualandi. They offer wads for gauges from 12 through .410 including two 16 ga. wads.
Z wads are made by (or for) Baschieri & Pellagri. They also offer wads in several designs for gauges from 12 through .410.
Cheddite and Gualandi 12 gauge wad designs show a strong similarity. The two companies might have been part of a single company at some time in the past. Both might have been part of Fiocchi. This might help explain why Cheddite and Fiocchi hull designs appear to be identical (they are for all practical purposes).
Cheddite and Gualandi components are widely used by a number of European and US ammo companies including Fiocchi for load production. This leads me to believe a number of ammo brands sold around the globe contract Fiocchi to manufacture their ammo. This also leads me to believe the three companies outsource quite a bit if not all production to somewhere in Asia--most likely in China or Malaysia. |
