I know an old fellow, now over 70, who has served as a pretty good example. He is still quite active. Even though the last couple of years have slowed him a good bit, he still hunts chukars. I remember being quite impressed when I hunted with him in his early 60's. There is much to be said for keeping on the move year round. |

Wyo, great subject for a thread. At 58, I'm clearly not young anymore and with the natural loss of muscle mass AND being out of shape, certain kinds of hunting can be exhausting very quickly. When my son reached the age of 4 (he's 12 now) and I got him into downhill skiiing, I made a point of getting in better shape and working on my leg strength so I would be able to enjoy the next 20 years of skiing with him. The carryover impact on my hunting has been fantastic.
Whatever the motivation, life's much better when you aren't out of breath with rubbery legs. |

Gil, since I read Bill Bryson's book on this subject I have been harbouring the ambition. Good to know I'm not too old yet. |

canvas, my wife is currently reading that same book (among 4 or 5 others she is reading). Told me the story of the poor woman they had tagging along with them. Really funny at times. |

Okay, I am young at 45 but to be fair I run myself pretty hard and in my late 20's getting out of shape for running up canyons after chukars still hurt. I was caught in the typical progression of getting older. At 32 I said screw it, this fat roll is gone! last spring I slacked a bit and payed for it come summer.
Snow birding is fine. There are plenty of places to do these things down south too. Well, maybe not the snow stuff, but there is always something. May I suggest trout on the San Juan?
|
I wouldn't be counting on the San Juan any time soon! Parts of SW Colorado have received 25 feet of snow so far. Lake Mead has received $3 million acre feet of water in the past 4 months. I had a trip to the Green River planned with some good friends for early May but I'm 95% sure that's not going to happen. I don't think fishing the high country is going to happen until late July at best.
Not necessarily a bad thing. The rain here in the SW has been great. There may actually be some Gambels quail hunting next year!

Fishing the Gorge or up here in Wyoming? Our stretch of the Green may be high in May. Below Flaming Gorge dam may not be too bad, depends on discharge levels. |

Timely topic and absolutely beautiful photos! The problem for me is lack of ambition coupled with mundane boring scenery. Typical subdivision lifestyle here. I don't feel as refreshed by my walk-about as you do. |

When she's done, read it yourself. It's worth it. He also wrote a very entertaining book about visiting Australia. Had me laughing out loud many times, and was interesting and informative. |

The one man pontoon boat has been keeping me in good shape lately with the fringe benefit of putting me on a lot of real nice trout. Okay I'll admit, it's actually the other way around. That's my kind of exercise. All that rowing and kicking is no burden at all when the rod keeps bending!
