I have a box full of the Federal hulls that I'd like to reload but there doesn't seem to be any data available for my components.
The spreadsheets have some but nothing for 7/8 oz. and DR16 wads and either 20/28 or Green Dot. The primers can be anything except Fiocchi.
There are a few 7/8 oz. loads but the pressure was not included so my instinct is to not use them.
If anyone knows of any data I would be grateful.
Thank you. |

the Hogdon reloading site has MANY 1oz loads for that hull. reducing the shot weight will result in a slightly faster vel. and could require a small filler, such as a dry bean or plastic air gun pellet. but with 0 wad pressure that my not be necessary. |

I load 16.5 grains of Green Dot with 7/8 oz of shot in Federal hulls DR16 wad and Fed. 209A primer. If pockets get worn I switch to Rio primers. Very light recoil but work well. Lyman calls for 20 grains with SP16 wad and fillers. I feel it's a very safe but untested load. I've run thousands thru my Ithaca 37 and my Springfield double with no adverse affects on the guns or my shoulder. |

Byrdog an Ohio Wirehair, thanks for the info. I know Hodgdon has a bunch of loads but unfortunately I don't have any of their powders on hand so my choices are limited. |

It has been stated here on the forum that the straight wall hulls are fairly interchangeable, maybe someone with some supporting data can provide some illumination on the subject.
So if you find a load that suits your needs in a Winchester or Cheddite hull then as long as pressure is in the moderate range, there shouldn't be an issue swapping in a Federal Hull. For my current load, I use the Winchesters for the short version and Federals for the 2 3/4". Just so I can tell them apart at a glance. |

Actually Art Green Dot is my powder of choice and I have gone to great length to find loads in 12,16, and 20. Remington Game loads have a (sorta)tapered hull so I drop to 14.2 grains of Green Dot. 16.5 would be way over pressure in Remingtons! Cheddite, Fio, and Rio I treat like Federal. |

Most, if not all, powder makers have data for their powders on their websites. I used to gather up loading manuals, but now i just hit "favorites". |

The Federal plastic straight wall polyformed hulls with compressed paper base wads tend to produce lower peak pressures if all else in the load is equal including identical components and powder charges. Those plastic polyformed hulls w/ flat plastic base wads do tend to produce similar ballistic results w/ identical components and powder charges. Identical powder charges should produce safe results if all else is equal only if the powder charges are moderate to begin with. It is best to avoid max powder charges if different hull brands are mixed. Max loads require specific, proven safe data. Also, the ballistic results will vary more if hull brands are mixed.
Also be advised that some of the European hull designs have specialized plastic base wads which produce very different ballistic results. They are perfectly safe to reload but only with specific data. Never mix these specialized hulls in with others and load them all with the same data. Bad idea.
My best advice here is to always sort your hulls by type and brand and load them separately into specific lots. Doing so will help keep you safe and will also produce more uniform results which is an important consideration. |

Here are 3 published loads from BPI from their "Load of the Week" using GD or 20/28, and cheddite hulls, which are of similar volume to the Federal (Herters are cheddite). The Z16 wad is used. Not sure how that compares to the DR16.
However, the 20/28 load lists 8400psi for 1425 fps... lot of speed and pressure available there for conservative substitutions. Same with the 18.0gr GD load. Recent LOTW postings too.
