Was warm, sticky, & buggy. Still dense foliage. Spent most my time off trail.
The little black dog in his 14th season is still getting it done. Shot one saw several others. Couldn't find the safety button on the model 12 quick enough once...........................................

Fall on the N Shore is good. Heard Ruffs are on the upside of things.
Around here getting into a lotta' the blue grouse country is dicey - lot of snow on top of muddy roads up high, slick and juicy.
Took the SxS and the little girl out for huns yesterday, only found pheasants.
Ditch parrots aren't legal yet, but they better look out soon. My girl had 5 of 'em dead to rights - could not for the life of her figure out why they were allowed to fly away unmolested.................. |

Nice to hear the veteran is still out there getting it done. Nothing like hunting with a well experienced dog. |

fourtrax,
Looks like a good warm time, experienced dogs are the best! Model 12 have that safety problem, it happens. Still got a nice bird however. Lost my Ryman Setter Daisy this summer, in her 15 year. Daisy hunts now with my Grandfather and Father in God's never ending forest. Go easy with the little Blcak Dog and enjoy your time together.

Muzzle must have been reamed out. It's cylinder. Very wide pattern. Good for the close in barely see'em early season. bbl is stamped MOD. Patterning it at 20 yds half the pellets aren't even in the 30" circle, many not 6" outside of circle. |

Does it look to have good distribution within the circle, Steve? Might be a good barrel from which to shoot 9s!
My A5's cylinder barrel gives a better distribution at 25 yards than the .006" choked barrel of my Fox, using the same shells. Each has their optimum combination. |

isn't bad. # 9 shot would give it more to work with perhaps better density.
After fumbling for the safety will be switching to something I'm more at home with. Perhaps the 1148 16 ga?? Choked I.C. Was using the model 12 due to rain, humidity & wet foliage. Belgian guild gun 16 sxs is in the truck also. If the rain holds off this aftn. the Pup will get a solo run. |

Was still muggy& buggy yesterday. Took the Pup out for a couple hours before big rain forecast for overnite into today. Pup moved at least 5 birds in about two hours hunting. None were pointed. He's still learning grouse. He scents them starts nosing around and spooks them. He doesn't rush in on the scent but hasn't got a handle on things yet & eventually crowds them too much. I did finally take one yesterday that flushed wild well away from the pup flying across the trail I was on. Bird was dead in the air but due to heavy cover it took the dog to find it. Hung my hat about where I knew the bird went down. Looked a bit while the Pup was still sorting out scent elsewhere. Could not locate it. Called Smoke over & he found the bird immediately about ten ft. away. Let him play with it a bit & tossed it for a retrieve for fun.
He did well pointing & retrieving sharptail last year in MT. I'm hoping he gets a handle on Ruffs this season. |

fourtrax,
Give the dog a pat on the head for me, hay what gun did you finally use it's not in the picture? Got a couple weeks here before Grouse season comes in, and it is brutal in the woods right now.

Fall has hit here with cool wind off the Big Lake (50-s)& rain. It's ankle deep in the yard & coming down right now.
Used a beater sxs I had in the truck. I was commiting "12 ga"
I couldn't hit Sh^& with the model 12 so I switched guns. The nice belgian guild gun stayed in the truck as it was raining (lightly) when I went out. I used the Stoeger Upland Supreme (fence post). It is a gun I bought in 2005 as an experiment. Before I even shot it I cut off the pistol grip & made it an English grip. Gun will take 3" load & came with choke tubes. The surprising thing is that a bird falls from the sky every once in awhile when I use it. |

fourtrax,
I know an old Marine Sniper Instructor that is heck on wheels with his 20 Gauge Stoeger, any bird gun that can drop a Grouse stone dead at 50 plus yards over the tops of the trees, needs no apologizing for.
