Love the Sandhills, I didn't get chance to get out there this fall. Hoping they have good witner and spring next year, I won't miss two years in a row. |

I may be going there in a few weeks. It's been 14 years, too long. Much too long. |

Mike, James and you have had another excellent adventure. Good guns, dogs, food, beautiful terrain, birds and like-minded companionship. Gil |

Cocoa has to be the happiest-looking dog I know. Good job, Mike. |

Their cover was blown when James was overheard humming La Marseillaise as he was shooting the usual Sandhills suspects. Gil |

James has an international gathering with the five he brought; I just brought my two Ideal 16's, the 314 with three sets of barrels and the No.5
We are now on the north shore of Superior with Fourtrax. Will get more pics up as wifi is available.

In answer to Dave's question about guns, I brought 5 but two were 12 gauge. Given that in both Nebraska and Minnesota the quarry was grouse, I mostly used my mid 1930's 6 pound 4 ounce Heym 16 gauge with 29" barrels choked .007 and .015. One day in Nebraska I used my early 1920's 6 pound 10 ounce Pieper 16 gauge with 29" barrels choked .021 and .030 to see if that changed the equation for me. It did. My arms got tired faster! LOL The other three are a modern 16 gauge Citori I bring for back up in case waterfowl get on the menu and two 12's, a MF Ideal and a Lovena.
Also, just wanted to say that we met up with Fourtrax up in Minnesota and he could not have been more welcoming and you could not ask for a better guy to hunt with. Showed us his best spots (well, if he was smart he would have saved a few for himself ) Plus, he has some fantastic dogs.....Charlie and Smoke come to mind as they brought a grin to my face every time I watched them. But Grady and Victor were no slouches either, despite their advancing age.
And as luck would have it, also had a chance to meet Cold Iron from this site and enjoy a wonderful steak dinner with him. Again, a great guy I look forward to spending some time afield with him in the future. |

I drive up 83 every year on my way to Miller SD. Sometimes twice a year. Every time I pass through the sandhills I tell myself a hunt is in the future there. Naven't been able to get one together yet though. Wifes' parents live in Miller so it is imperative we get there. And on the way back through there is work waiting. One of these days though. |

I have a place that very near the Sandhills, in Custer County, NE. My place is in a little town of 600. At the north edge of town is a road, about 1/2 mile from my home, that rises quickly into the Sandhills.
I have been going there each November since 2004 and I am going to retire there.
We have a place to hunt in the Sandhills, we call the end of the earth and five miles farther. The end of the earth is at a fence line with a cattle grate. It is slightly uphill and you are looking towards the sky. As your truck gets completely on the cattle grate and the nose of the truck levels off, you are taken back by the landscape in front of you. I will never forget how it felt the first time I crossed that grate.
Surreal to say the least.
