I have no experience with shotgun barrels that have gas ports (my selection being breaks, pumps & long recoil actions). Reading the topic about removing petals from plastic wads, resulting in lead being scuffed onto the barrel got me to wondering. Cleaning the barrel is enough of a chore but what about the port into the gas system? Does the gas system become a trap for whatever is sliding along the interior of the barrel? Are the guns designed to provide accessibility to the gas system so that "the butler" can remedy the situation? |

No issues,
I use a pin vice and proper sized numbered drill bit.
Also, they sell a gas port pin punch tool for cleaning the port.

Gentlemen,
To avoid the problem , own and shoot a good L.C. Smith Double Gun!
Having very few stack barrel guns I simply use a pipe cleaner.

I shoot a 16 Gauge 1100 and I do take a slightly undersized drill bit and clean the junk out of the ports that operate the gas system. However I have never had the ports gather anything but burned powder residue. No plastic or lead ever. |

Had some experience with a Ruger 44 carbine. If you used Jacketed ammo no problems. If you used lead ammo the ports would clog and the action wouldn't cycle after just a few rounds. Wouldn't function regardless of ammo used until cleaned. What a pain.
However, no problems with our 1100's or 1187. They just don't like the Winchester promo's as found in the 100 round offerings from wally world. They consistantly fail to cycle. Everything else we try works fine. Doesn't seem to be an issue with the ports though. One doesn't cycle load up a different brand and away she goes. |

I've never cleaned the gas ports on my 1100s and A303s. They seem to be self-cleaning with thousands of pounds of hot gas pressure blowing through them. |

I've cleaned ours but not due to a malfunction just as a matter of maintenance. I say ours as they aren't mine but my wife and sons. If I shoot an auto it my sweet 16.

On my Beretta I usually just take a can of gun scrubber and using the thin plastic straw just blast a little of that into the internal gas ports every now and then. No issues. |
