Had my first sample of Mountain Lion, i.e. cougar, the other day. Our son on his first deer hunt came across one while slowly working his way down a trail and dropped it on the spot, one shot. Nice well fed young male 130 lbs, all muscle, quite a beast!
We decided to skin it and eat it. Tastes like pork but milder and sweeter.
Now I DEFINITELY need to back up my grouse loads with buckshot. There are more of them out there, and they give me the creeps when hunting solo down those old abandoned logging roads.

We have a small ranch in northeast Oregon, and we never go hiking or ride our mules
without out the ole 30-30 Win. Three wolf packs within 15 miles. |

Rumor among the ol fur trappers in the Rockies was that cougar meat was second only to Buffalo hump ribs.
I do know that bobcat is pretty tasty.

As an aside; I work for as a volunteer through the summer for a local National Wildlife Refuge doing feral hog trapping and hunting. Saw two nice cougars this summer in the refuge. Makes a total of 8 I have seen here in SW AR in my lifetime even though the State Game & Fish declares we don’t have a native population of them.

Brewster,
You bet some great tasting game meat, 2nd only to Elk back straps in IMO. Every year at the Student Prince in New England we had an incredible game meal with all the different beer on tap at the Bar. The men would fight just to get a second taste of the Mountain Lion, it definitely is one of my favorite wild game meals.
Great eating for sure.

I remember when a friend shot a mountain lion years ago. I walked in and they were having dinner, so he handed me a plate. I ate some and actually thought it was a piece of blue grouse. He said lion and I said he was "lion". He opened the fridge and showed me the other backstop. I was impressed. |

Those buggers are constant companions in MT, as well as allover the west.
Luckily, lion/bird dog issues are exceedingly rare - but the possibility is always there.............
This pic was taken about ten days ago while hunting deer in SE MT.

As for you guys eating them -
I'm sure they're just absolutely wonderful.
However some years ago I spent many an hour performing necropsies on lions.
The parasitology issues alone cured me of ever wanting to eat some.
Cooking to safe temps cannot be over stated.
And mountain kitty jerky - no thanks.................................................. |

I ate some years ago and thought it was very good. Although they're ubiquitous here in N ID and would shoot one if need be, I'd not eat one for personal reasons and reasons stated by mtbirder.
Same as I won't eat a member of the rodent family unless I was in dire straights for food! |

A big female thinned the Labradoodle population in my neighborhood a couple of years ago. Generally they still can't keep up with the Turkey and Whitetail population in the neighborhood. |
