An unplanned event by a certain unnamed 16 ga shooter...and it broke the target.

That is exactly why all 16 gauge shells should be purple. (Not that I’ve ever seen a yellow 16 gauge shell) |

I’m surprised the firing pin contacted the primer. |

Gentlemen,
Purchase some better shells, RST or Poly SpredR's I recommend highly.

Well, they may break the clay, but I can't keep the extractor from riding over the rim. |

Brave of you to admit your mistake here. My club has an annual womens day where novices can come out to learn basic gun safety and then get some training on pistol, rifle, shotgun. I always volunteer on the trap range. We members also bring our own guns for them to use. each shooter has a member instructor next to them. One of the guns I brought was my new A5 Sw16. Starting out, I was on station 4. Imagine how much I yelled when I saw on station one the SW16 spit out a yellow hull. Luckily, no one or the gun was harmed. The member instructor in question is a state youth firearms safety instructor so it can happen to anyone. Your sharing here is a good reminder to us all to be eternally vigilant. Thanks |

I did that once in a belgium A5 , if remember correctly it broke the target also. No one hurt and no damage , had to take the barrel off and use a cleaning rod to get the stuck hull out of the chamber .
Still not sure how that 20ga round got mixed in with my 16ga ammo . |

20 in a 16 and 16 in a 12? -- Not advisable but not a terrible thing. 20 in 12? Not good! That's why 20's are unfortunately yellow and lacking in character and variation nowadays (the last half century or so), but thankfully, a 16 gauge shell can still be just about any color. Purple? Yeah, whatever blows your hair back, I guess . . . . No one followed Federal's lead on that, as it just isn't necessary. |

Why? Just proved the color of the shell doesn't matter. |

I must meekly admit I did it once as a young hunter. I shot a red super x 20ga in my 16 SXS, it shot and broke the target and when I broke the gun open I realized what I had done. It shocked me at the time and made me religious about the segregation of shells and is one of the reasons I have gone to one gauge for hunting 90% plus.
The only 28, 12, & 20 shells in my hunting truck are for friends if they run out and are taped shut unlike all the 16. |

Remington 16ga Game Loads (at least the ones I have, probably 6+ years old) are BLACK.
Remington 12ga Game Loads (at least the ones I have, probably 10+ years old) are BLACK.
I made a STUPID mistake and left 12ga RGLs in my vest loops after LAST years winter pheasant hunt....went grouse hunting THIS year with my Remington 31 16ga...grabbed my vest and 16ga Society shell bag, got to the hunting area, looked in my vest pocket, shells inside, grabbed a handful out of the box to load my gun...had a bird flush 2 hours later...boom boom....one left in the magazine...reached in my vest. YUP...12ga #4s...only had 1 shot left. Walked back to my truck....2 hours....flushed 6 more birds from where I had already been. (No I dont have a dog....)
That trip sucked. It rained after lunch for the rest of the day.
It was a beautiful day when I was out though, and I do love a walk in the woods.
I got home and found Winchester makes 16ga shells RED...just like 12ga shells.
I bought some Herters on sale at Cabelas...those are PURPLE...but that's another post from back in september or so.
Yes, they need to color code. It's the smart thing to do. |
