I just received an O/U that I purchased online (w/ 3-day inspection period). Didn't think about it at first, but when I got it home I noticed side-to-side movement in the lockup... this was described as bore excellent, wood very good, and solid lock up...
It's been hunted every bit if its 63 years by the wear on the checkering. But, otherwise it's in very good condition.
My question is who knows of a qualified 'smith to inspect and repair it to a safe condition?
Or, should I just send it back?
Thanks in advance... |

Would not be happy with the excessive movement. Unless the price was very good I.e.enough to cover repair cost, I would send it back. Unless, of course you REALLY like the gun.
Just my opinion and I am picky kind of buyer. |

Merkels are built hell for stout. Someone shot the bejesus out of that gun. I agree though if you feel you stole it I’d get it fixed. I take it it’s a 16? Hard to find a DT 16 O/U and if you like it, well maybe keep it. But maybe contact the seller and see if they’ll allow you time to have it inspected. Tell them otherwise you’re sending it back. Maybe they’ll even give you some funds back, you could try that also. Once repaired you’ll have quite a nice gun. I like carry wear, it adds to the gun imho. It takes decades for a gun to look that way and tells some of its story. |

I second that. I have two Merkels and they are great. |

Gentlemen,
If he keeps the gun the seller should pay for the repairs, if not even with a good deal send the gun back. Seldom if ever have I seem a Merkel gun with this kind of problem. Make sure you are not biting off more of a repair problem than you need too.
